The Single Room Housing Assistance Corporation (SRHAC) is dedicated to the prevention of cyclical patterns of homelessness. This Goal is achieved through two means:

  • Providing permanent, safe, supportive housing for very low income, disabled and homeless individuals in a stable environment, and

  • The preservation of Chicago's essential Single Room Occupancy (SRO) housing stock.

The SRHAC Concept

Created in 1995, SRHAC provides a bridge between very low-income populations in need of permanent supportive housing and the operators of privately owned SRO buildings throughout Chicago.

Additionally, SRHAC provides ongoing development support to SRO tenants, staff and owners. The purpose of this program is to provide appropriate services to special needs populations residing in private-sector SRO housing. To support this endeavor, SRHAC created a social service linkage network made up of twenty-six core social service agencies dedicated to homelessness prevention of SRO residents.
